Tank upgrades increased production capacity

Factory Manager Torben Krøyer provides insight into the considerations behind the project to rebuild their production tanks:

“We decided to rebuild our production tanks due to increased demand for our products. We therefore began exploring options to expand our production capacity based on the existing system, which consisted of two dissolvers feeding six tanks.

In addition, our tanks were open, which required extra time and cost for cleaning, and we needed to find a solution for this as well.

We presented our proposal to Nordic Engineering, whom we chose for their extensive competence and experience in the field. We received solid and highly qualified guidance throughout the entire process.”

Energy Savings

With the increased tank capacity, the existing dissolver mixer could no longer handle the larger product volumes.

The correct process solution—and the most energy-efficient one—was an EKATO agitator equipped with the advanced hydrofoil impeller type Viscoprop. This design ensured optimal mixing at minimal energy consumption, resulting in significant energy savings for the customer.

Nordic Engineering performed the complete engineering process for increasing the tank capacity, including design, calculations, and implementation of new tank tops and agitators. The capacity of the existing open tanks was increased by extending the existing shells by 700 mm in height and adding a dished top head. This new design also converted the tanks into closed vessels, improving hygiene. The tank tops were designed and engineered to withstand the mechanical loads of the new EKATO agitators.

“Today, the solutions remain stationary, and four tanks have now been rebuilt into closed mixing tanks.
We have increased our batch sizes from 3,000 litres to 4,500 litres and can produce and adjust across all six tanks simultaneously.
In addition, we have improved hygiene levels and mounted all pumpable raw materials to the top of the tanks.
We expect to increase production on the line by 50%.”

Beck & Jørgensen is a Danish family-owned company founded in 1892. They develop and manufacture high-quality paint products for the professional market in Denmark. Their product portfolio ranges from paints and wood protection to wallpapers, brushes, and spray equipment.

The company employs approximately 90 people and produces more than 100 different products. These are distributed through 16 company-owned professional stores, 12 franchise-based wholesalers, and over 50 independent retailers.

Recommendation

A request for production optimisation does not necessarily mean a complete replacement of all existing process equipment. Often, optimisation through adjustments to individual parameters—such as more efficient mixing or redesigning existing tanks—can significantly improve production capacity.
